The Best Resume Format for 2026

The right format depends on your situation, but for most people there is one clear answer.

Reverse-chronological

This lists your most recent job first. Recruiters and applicant tracking systems are used to it, and it works best if you have steady work history. For most applicants this is the right choice.

Functional

This groups skills together and hides dates. Many recruiters distrust it because it can look like it is covering a gap. Avoid it unless you have a strong reason.

Combination

A skills section on top followed by a chronological history. It suits career changers who need to show transferable skills early.

Layout rules

• One column, with plain headings.
• One page for under 10 years of experience; two pages at most otherwise.
